These hair & makeup looks spotted during the New York Fashion Week 2023 stood out from the rest.
The New York Fashion Week Fall/Winter 2023 season has finally come to a close, and while it’ll be months before we can wear the clothes that came down the runway, we don’t have to wait a second to start testing out the beauty trends. The latest runway shows gave us a number of stunning beauty trends with multiple options for everyone, regardless of taste level. We’re finally getting away from no-makeup makeup (great in real life, boring on the runway) and playing with colour in new and unique ways.
The latest beauty trends spotted during one of the most incredible Fashion Weeks, the New York Fashion Week 2023, showcased a new mood of maximalism and intentionality. The New York runways were typically full of sporty ponytails, beachy waves, and the occasional classic red lips or flick of black liner. However, these beauty looks have been changing throughout the years, leading to breathtaking hair and makeup looks. This season, designers and their backstage glam teams seemed to really lean into the pretty and the playful when it came to hair and makeup, creating joyful, creative, classic looks to accompany their collections.
It’s time to reflect on the most memorable runway beauty moments during NYFW Fall 2023. From the “goth fairy beauty look,” and natural hairstyle to pale lips and “easy on the eyes”, let’s have a look at some of the boldest beauty trends spotted on the runway shows.
VIVA MAGENTA, FLORAL ACCENTS & BOLD LIPSTICK
We usually think of bright lipstick as a spring trend but this fall season saw bold pinks, purples and reds at shows such as Christian Siriano. He presented his collection where a flower-themed show featured hues of glossy pink, red and purple lipstick, accentuated by strong contour lines leading to the lips. The Viva Magenta Pantone Colour of the Year was also present. Lacy Redway, Unilever stylist and celebrity hairstylist, also said regarding hair looks, “Christian’s collection is stunning. It feels ethereal and romantic. We were inspired by the hand-crafted floral accents found throughout the collection to echo this in the hair by creating a rose-like twist, with a ‘stem’ of hair weaving down the crown of the head, meeting the rose-like bun in the back,”.
NATURAL HAIR LOOK
For this Fall 2023, Proenza Schouler got inspired by the ‘Portraits of a Woman’, which encompasses different moments of life: walking, jogging, work, meeting friends, or any other simple moments. “Their beauty and realness are enhanced through a few select hair products to bring out their way, genuine and natural sense of selves.” Says Guido Palau, who worked on skin and makeup, keeping the whole vibe glowy, dewy, and natural, with no makeup, no brow product, and minimal coverage.
GOTH “WEDNESDAY” MOOD
More than a few models walked the runway rocking black eyeliner, often with an all-black outfit. We saw it at Sandy Liang and Batsheva, too. Maybe it’s because seemingly everyone in the world watched the hit Netflix show. At Rodarte, makeup artist James Kaliardos used Nars cosmetics for his “goth fairies. Models wore essential makeup to portray the mood: dark lipstick, dark nails, and heavy eyeliner. “The collection is more fairy than goth, so we really wanted to do strong and bold makeup and linear eyeliner eyes with a dark black or blue lip,” says NARS makeup lead James Kaliarados. “I think a lot of girls I know really want to look like this, so it’s not totally costume or fantasy – it’s really something people want to be a part of.”
Fashion label Anna Sui showcased its latest Fall 2023 collection during NYFW, focusing on bolder beautiful beauty looks. Wild eyes were key for the label. The eye makeup bordered on neon, and the mascara was coloured, too. The creative designer got inspired by The Peppermint Lounge and the ‘60s. “The makeup is a reflection of the era’s bold and vivid fashion sense, with an explosion of colour and tantalising textures,” says team Pat McGrath.
Pale Lips are becoming the trendiest beauty looks so far. Fashion labels KGL and Coach unveiled their collections focusing on nude lips to their skin tone and creating a simple, edgy and chic look.
