Luxury fashion house Marc Jacobs has brought their iconic handbag style to date, the “Stam Bag”, marking this his latest edition to Jacobs’ “(M)Archives collection” of timeless accessories. In charge of styling was Alastair McKimm, with casting direction from Bert Martirosyan. Beauty was the work of hair stylist Dylan Chavles and makeup artist Sam Visser.
The Marc Jacobs design initially debuted on the Fall 2005 runways and was named after Jessica Stam, who was famously part of the elite group of “doll-faced” models in the 2000s. Y2K’s steam has yet to run out and it definitely continues influencing designers in their creative direction and marketing.
Throughout the years, every celebrity carried the namesake bag, including celebrities, singers, and socialites like Beyoncé, Rihanna, Nicky Hilton, Sophia Bush, Ashley Tisdale, and the list goes on. These stars were all photographed wearing the same bag, which sparked a veritable fashion frenzy. The Marc Jacobs Stam Bag, named after Canadian supermodel Jessica Stam, was first introduced back in 2005, and it became one of the brand’s most notable silhouettes. Mary J. Blige and Eva Longoria also sported the Stam bag with other early aughts strongholds, like chunky belts and shimmery brow bone highlighter.
The Stam’s signature quilt and chunky hardware helped propel it to It-bag status from its 2005 launch. However, the brand eventually phased it out in 2013 – fashion’s guard was changing, and streetwear was emerging as that decade’s dominant mode. Kim Kardashian and co were swapping out their Hervé Léger bandage dresses for bike shorts and bomber jackets, and the Stam bags went with him.
“First introduced back in 2005, the Stam Bag has become one of the brand’s most notable silhouettes. Named after model Jessica Stam, the handbag shaped the Y2K fashion scene with its unique structure, soft quilted leather, and bold hardware that seemingly bridged uptown simplicity with downtown edge. Often seen on icons like Paris Hilton, Hillary Duff, Rihanna, and more, the Stam earned the title as it-bag of the era.” – From Marc Jacobs.
The icon bag is now being introduced 10 years after its retirement with nearly identical components to its 2000s counterpart for the brand’s spring-summer 2023 season. To celebrate this new release, the label chose Paris Hilton, Ashanti, Ashlee Simpson, Selma Blair, and of course, Canadian supermodel Jessica Stam herself to participate and pose for the latest campaign. The stars all displayed their new Stam Bags front and centre in photos shot by photographer Harley Weir. The style has a quilted leather look and features a distinctive metal chain with a coin-purse closure. The shoulder strap is removable, allowing you to carry it in multiple ways. You can find the refreshed accessory in two sizes classic and small, and in three hues: black, white, or pink.
