WHEN IS THE 2023 MET GALA?

The 2023 annual Costume Institute Benefit “Met Gala” will take place on May 1st, 2023. As it is already known, the Met Gala is always hosted on the first Monday in May every year at the Met in New York, apart from in 2020, when the event was cancelled, and in 2021, when it was held in September, because of the pandemic. This year’s gala is again held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (Fifth Avenue, Manhattan) in New York City.

WHAT IS THE 2023 MET GALA THEME?

Karl Lagerfeld

This year’s Met Gala theme is Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty. The aim is to pay tribute to the late former Chanel creative director, photographer, artist, and fashion designer, who died in 2019 aged 85. Besides, the Met Gala’s dress code will be “in honour of Karl. His life and work,”. Guests will be able to choose from the creative director’s vast archives at Chanel, Fendi, Balmain, Patou, and his eponymous brand, too. The idea is that guests explore the designer’s stylistic language.

Costume Institute curator Andrew Bolton will be in charge of the exhibition. He emphasized it will not be a “traditional retrospective”. Amanda Harlech will be the show’s creative consultant. She worked closely with Lagerfeld for years.

“At its heart, the exhibition will look at the evolution of Karl’s two-dimensional drawings into three-dimensional garments,” Andrew said. “We could not do a traditional retrospective. For one thing, I think Karl would have hated that.”

The gala’s companion exhibition will run throughout the entire month and well into July. “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty” will open to the public on May 5th, 2023.
